DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS STANFORD UNIVERSITY Polarization Phenomena in Random MediaAbstract: Many mathematical problems arise in our efforts to use light for imaging purposes. Therefore, a theoretical understanding of the interaction of light with random media is essential in designing effective imaging techniques. One phenomenon that is receiving a great deal of attention is the depolarization of light due to scattering. In this talk, we focus our attention on the fundamental characteristics of polarized light propagation and scattering in random media modeled by the vector radiative transfer equation. By interpreting results form numerical simulations, we explore the potential of using polarization information to reconstruct optical images. |
