Wave Propagation in Continuous and Discrete Nonlinear Media

Abstract:   In the first part of my talk, I will consider two strongly interacting beams in a nonlinear continuous medium and demonstrate that the net effect of one beam on the other is to significantly reduce its transverse instability. In the other part, a novel model governing the propagation of an optical beam in a diffraction managed nonlinear waveguide array is proposed. A nonlocal integral equation governing the slow evolution of the beam amplitude is derived. Two novel numerical schemes are proposed to construct soliton solutions for both the integral equation as well as for the original model.
