Dr. David R. Pratt
Vice-President for Technology, Chief Scientist (Fellow) Training & Simulation Solutions Business Unit Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Real World Word ProblemsAbstract:   This presentation will cover four of the applied mathematical problems we are facing. First, the problem of fast coordinate transformations from a GPS provided Geodetic Coordinates to a geocentric Cartesian coordinate frame. The twist - it has to be done quickly in a computationally limited environment. The second problem is an error propagation problem growing out of collaborative robotic mapping of a semi-urban environment. To what degree of a certainty do I know where something is, or even if two of the robots are looking at the same thing? The third problem concerns the simplification of topological constructs for aggregate entity route planning. The basic topological structure of the synthetic environment can be derived from the underlying database; the issue is the abstraction of these constructs to provide higher level maps about which units can reason. The fourth problem, and perhaps the most relevant, is how we can establish a working relationship to address the first three. |
