Dr. Gunther Uhlman
University of Washington

Travel Time Tomography

Abstract:  Professor Uhlman is one of the major figures in the field of Inverse Problems. His talk (aimed at a large audience) is focusing on a problem in geophysics: reconstruction of the inner core of the earth from the travel time of the seismic waves. This problem is intimately connected to a long standing congecture in Riemannian geometry, which he recently proved it true in two dimensions.
