UCF EXCEL PROGRAM

Abstract:  The National Science Foundation has a Science Talent Expansion Program (STEP) program with the goal of increasing the number of US citizens and permanent residents obtaining B.S. degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. At UCF 50% of the Freshmen who declare STEM majors ultimately do not obtain STEM degrees. The attrition is primarily due to the freshmen/sophomore mathematics and science courses with high failure rates (Calculus and Physics). Dr. Young and Dr. Georgiopoulos (Electrical Engineering) are the directors of the UCF EXCEL program which is a 5 yr $1.7M program based on learning communities: connecting students, faculty, and disciplines. Dr. Young will talk about the program and how faculty in mathematics can participate.
