These include methods for solving equations; functions and their properties; elementary functions including exponential, logarithmic polynomials and rational; matrices. This course is delivered using the Academic Systems Interactive Mathematics software. This will not be a traditional lecture format. This software provides multimedia lessons that allow you to control the pace of the material, but keep in mind that you still have to complete the course syllabus by the end of the semester and take all exams at the scheduled time. NOTE: This is not a web course, though it can be done using your home computer with an internet connection. If you choose to do the course from home, you are still responsible for checking with your instructor for any important messages and you must do all exams in MAP110 on the scheduled days. A broken home computer is not an excuse for not completing the course as the lab in MAP110 is available during your scheduled time. The lab is provided to those without computers or internet access for completing the course. You may use the lab at any time it is open except during exams or other scheduled activities. See the posted bulletin board or the web page for schedule.Text/Software: Interactive Mathematics-College Algebra (Academic Systems) which includes all CDs for the course including the Internet client. Each CD also contains a electronic version of the text in PDF format. The text is referred to as PAN (Personal Academic Notebook).Note 1: You will not be given an account for the Academic Systems software until you bring the first page of the textbook with your signature. (Rip it out of the text and give to the instructor). For this reason, you should not purchase a used copy of the course material as you will not be able to get an account.Note 2: When you purchase the CDs you are also purchasing a license for you to use the system, so the bookstore will not take returns or buybacks at the end of the semester.Note 3: You should mark your CDs with a permanent marker so if you accidentally leave it in the CDROM drive in the lab it can be easily returned to you. You can borrow the lab markers if you do not have any.Note 4: If you forget to bring your CD with you to the lab, you may sign one out from the instructor in exchange for your student ID. This will be returned when you return the CD. Note 5: Sections 5.1 and 5.2 are not in the PAN but there are PDF versions of these on CD2 which contains the material for Chapter 5. These files are also available on the lab computers with links on the desktop.Default Password: Once you have purchased the software you will use your first initial and last name (as on UCF records) as your login name for your Academic Systems account. For example, if your name is John Doe then your login name is jdoe (case doesn't matter). You will assigned the default password: algebra. After you log on the first time, please change your password.Web Page: http://acad.math.ucf.edu. The web page has class schedule, sample tests and links to information on using various features of the software and installation of the internet client on your home computer.Software Web Page: http://www2.academic.com. Be sure to read the Resources topics: 1. Getting Started for general information on the software and installation instructions 2. Interactive Mathematics for using the software features including the grapher and expression editor.Headphones: You are required to bring a set of headphones for use in the lab (MAP 110). If you already own a portable CD or cassette player, then you will already own the correct type of headphone. If you do not have any, you may purchase a set in the UCF bookstore or any other general or electronics merchandise store. No headphones are available in the lab.Calculator: A basic scientific calculator. It should be non-graphing, non-programmable and without symbolic capabilities.Exams: There will be four one hour exams during the semester. The exams are weighted about 50% multiple choice and 50% free response questions. The dates are given on the attached schedule. Sample tests are available at the web site. Doing the sample tests and homework is a good way to prepare for these exams. All exams take place in MAP110. Bring your calculator and your student ID to all exams.Evaluates: These are quizzes you will do from the software. When you have completed each section of the course you should do the evaluate quiz. You will get automatic feedback on your grade and the correct solutions after you complete each evaluate. You have two tries for each one and your highest grade is used. If you like, you may use the pretest or the practice test in the PAN to practice for your evaluate quiz. There are a total of 12 of these evaluates. You should complete the first attempt at an evaluate by the dates shown on the schedule. Doing this gives you up to 5% of your grade and also helps you to keep up in the class. You must complete all evaluates by midnight on the last day of classes.Homework: When you complete a session working with Academic Systems, you will automatically be assigned homework from the PAN. Even though homework doesn't count, it is a good idea to do the problems as these type of problems mightl be on exams.Grade: Four Exams 60%, Final Exam 25%, Completing first attempt at evaluates by scheduled dates 5%, Average score on all Evaluates 10%, Participation 2% Bonus (to get the full 2% you should have logged at least 25 hours online and completed most the work within each section). The course is graded A, B, C, NC or F. Instructor is not obligated to give a NC. Instructor may grant an NC or no credit grade if you are spending adequate time online and take all exams and have a final course average of at least 50%MAP 110 Lab Rules and Information:1. No food or drink allowed in the lab at any time.2. Bring the CD you're working on to class as well as your headphones.
