ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance is an important part of the learning process. Students are expected to attend each lecture; attendance records may be kept. Evidence of excessive absences may be used in the assignment of course grades. Common courtesy requires that students come to class on time, and stay the entire class period. Cellphones should be turned off. Please treat your classmates and instructor with respect and courtesy.

GRADING POLICY
There will be periodic announced short quizzes given at the beginning of class, four in-class tests, and a comprehensive final exam. Homework will be assigned; at my option, it may be collected and graded periodically.Dates for the midterm exams will be announced in class. They will occur at roughly equal intervals. The final exam is scheduled for Monday, December 8, 10:00am-1:00pm in the usual classroom.

TENTATIVE LIST OF TOPICS
We will cover essentially the entire book, with some omissions (most notably Sections 14, 15). This course is an introduction to abstract algebra. It covers the elementary theory of groups (definitions, cyclic groups, subgroups, normality, homomorphisms, and quotient groups); elementary ring theory (definitions, ideals, quotient rings, homomorphisms, polynomial rings), and a small amount of field theory (the field of fractions).

OTHER INFORMATION
By University policy, students may make up missed quizzes, tests, and exams in the case of illness, family emergency, religious holidays, or official university activity. In order to have a make-up, students must present the instructor with written documentation of the absence. Such documentation must be submitted within two lecture periods after the absence. If the absence falls under one of the categories above, a make-up will be given on Tuesday, December 9 at 10am. Alternatively, in the case of approved absences only, a student, in consultation with the instructor, may elect to have that score replaced by the final exam score. For unapproved absences, a score of zero will be entered in the gradebook. Students who miss more than one exam will be dealt with on a case by case basis. Each student MUST take the final exam. Students who do not take the final exam will receive an F for the course.
